An algorithm for filtering noise in MR images was developed. In its basic form, it is a local adaptive rank filter which first segments images into subareas and afterwards smoothes images signal within the segments. Applying the filter to common MRI images of different body parts, shows an improvement of SNR by 84%, without any loss of image diagnostic quality.
