Mechanical engineering in a changing world

The role of mechanical engineers is continuously revitalizing. The education of mechanical engineers allows them to participate in a large variety of activities including research and development, design, manufacturing, engineeping management, and maintenance. In addition to the classic discipline of mechanical engineering, the basic education of mechanical engineering allows mechanical engineering graduates to work in a broad range of disciplines including: aerospace engineering, marine engineering, nuclear engineering, civil engineering, material science, environmental engineering, mechatronics and robotics, electronic packaging, computer engineering, and bio-medical engineering.
Many forecasts about leading technologies for the coming years include:
  • Nanotechnology
  • Robotics
  • Alternative energy sources
  • Environment
  • Bio-engineering

These and other topics that are studied and developed in mechanical engineering are expected to contribute substantially to our quality of life, economy, and security. They also support significantly other popular technologies such as computer engineering. For example, the problems related to developing faster processors are related to material science, manufacturing processes, and heat transfer, all classic mechanical engineering topics. Mechanical engineering is therefore a fundamental discipline to many popular and newly exciting technologies.
Mechanical engineering is influenced significantly by development of computers. Cars, planes, ships, robots, manufacturing tools, power plants, air-conditioning systems, and even structures such as bridges, dams, and buildings, are operated, controlled and maintained using computers. Many industrial processes are controlled by computers and a growing part of design and development processes is supported by computers. The new area of mechatronics that integrates mechanics, electronics and computers is also a by product of the growing importance of computers in our life.
The up-to-date study program and advanced education and research laboratories allow students to acquire knowledge in these areas and be prepared to deal with, participate, and contribute to their future developments.

A variety of study programs

The school offers a 4-year undergraduate program leading to the degree of B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering, as well as graduate studies programs for the degrees of M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering, and Ph.D. In addition, there is a very popular special graduate program leading to the degree of M.Sc. in Environmental Engineering. Gifted students may also apply for the fast M.Sc. track and fast Ph.D. track.

Academic staff

The SME has an academic staff of about 30, and an additional 15 external lecturers, mainly from industry. Several outstanding faculty members are the recipients of some of the most prestigious scientific awards. Graduate students have thus a wide choice when selecting a supervisor and topic for their thesis research.

Facilities

Our faculty and graduate students have at their disposal experimental laboratories and computation facilities of the highest standing. The SME has ten teaching laboratories for undergraduate studies and 15 research laboratories serving our academic staff and graduate students. The SME is centrally located in the Wolfson Building of Mechanical Engineering, a very unusual building designed by Louis Kahn.

Student body

The undergraduate program has about 400 mechanical engineering students, including a substantial group from the elite atuda program. Full-time graduate students usually receive a scholarship, and in addition are often hired as teaching assistants.
Graduates of the school hold key positions in industry, academy, and the civil sector:
  • Some graduates serve as executive managers in Israeli Aircraft Industry, HP, Tadiran, Elbit, and other leading companies.
  • Many graduates found successful companies and young graduates found numerous start-up companies.
  • Other graduates serve in key positions in IDF.
  • Several dozens gradates hold positions I academy in Israel and abroad.
The faculty of engineering has a leading alumni organization that holds many professional and social activities. The organization helps in networking, job seeking, and professional development.
