This talk will focus on the challenges facing groundwater resources managers due to uncertainty related to spatial variability and data scarcity on one hand, and balancing between environmental and economic values, on the other. To address these challenges, theoretical and practical solutions have been developed, following a profound paradigm change, moving away from deterministic towards stochastic concepts. I will review the history of the paradigm change, and I will demonstrate it with case studies dealing with subsurface contamination by uranium, with geophysical scanning of the shallow subsurface for agricultural applications and with deep-ocean natural gas exploration. I will cover in some detail the challenge of designing field data acquisition under large uncertainty.
