Optical Tools for Structure and Function: From single molecule to whole organism

Advancements in organic and inorganic chemistry, nanotechnology, and optical imaging enable the study of biological system with ever growing detail. New tools open avenues for quantitative approaches for analysis of such systems in time and space. I will describe the utility of some of these tools for direct imaging of DNA binding proteins interacting with their genomic targets and for the controlled light activation of genetic pathways in developing zebrafish embryos.
