Better than being there: Towards an intelligent proxy in future telecommunication systems

Abstract:

I will present the current activity in the Advanced Reality Lab (http://avl.idc.ac.il) with a focus on the EU project Beaming. Despite the current explosion of telecommunication technologies – including email, mobile phones, video conferencing, and shared virtual worlds – it is still more efficient to physically travel to remote locations for business, scientific or family meetings, even if at a huge environmental, energetic and opportunity cost. The science and technology developed in the Beaming project aims at giving people a real sense of physically being in a remote location with other people, and vice versa, without actually travelling, using breakthroughs in virtual reality, augmented reality, tele-robotics and haptic technologies. In the Advanced Reality Lab our goal is at providing a better-than-being-there experience on top of Beaming; specifically, we are exploring the concept of an intelligent proxy representation that is able to represents you when you are away or let you attend to multiple sessions at the same time.
