Patient-Specific Modeling of the Cornea
The importance of integrating patient-specific data into finite elements models is straight-forward, allowing the ability to analyze information that considers the specific case at hand. Yet, most biomechanical models of the cornea have been simplified geometric models of a sphere or an ellipsoid or an axisymmetric model and have not been based on actual patient data. The few that were based on patient-specific data rely solely on the true geometry of the cornea and do not integrate actual patient-specific material properties. A method for acquiring patient-specific corneal geometry was established and verified. Then a mathematical formulation for acquiring patient-specific hyperelastic stress-strain curves in-vivo was developed based on simple clinical measurements. The formulation's capacity is demonstrated through computer simulations for a variety of inputs and clinically-relevant cases. Resulting curves were compared with previously published in-vitro data. The patient-specific geometry and material properties will be integrated to produce a finite elements model that can allow in-silico simulations. One application for this model is to predict optical-power maps under varying levels of intraocular pressure. Such capability will aid clinicians with the prognosis of keratoconus by determining if the subject at hand might be more susceptible to peaks in IOP and therefore might recommend the use of IOP regulating medications.
