Adaptive Control of a Nonlinear Function of the State and Its Application to Wind-Turbine Control

With certain types of wind-turbine generators the power output can be controlled. In weak-grid conditions associated with remote installations of wind farms, the power becomes a quadratic function of the current which is the state of the system. Traditional linear controllers are then shown to be insufficient. With this problem in mind, we define a general nonlinear adaptive control system, where a nonlinear function of the state needs to be regulated according to a given reference signal. Adaptation is needed as we assume this function to be unknown. Our approach consists of simultaneously estimating the nonlinear function, computing the desired state to track the reference signal, and driving the system to this desired state. Even though estimation and control are in general two contradicting requirements, we are able to prove convergence of the tracking error. We are also able to show robustness to measurement noise and unmodeled dynamics, as well as address a unique aspect of this problem by which the reference signal cannot be tracked for every nonlinear function of the state. The talk will consist of a short background on wind-turbine generator control, the theory supporting the new adaptive controller, and its application to a single and a network of wind-turbines.
