Retrospective Privacy: Managing Longitudinal Privacy in Online Social Networks

Abstract:

 

Online social networks make social information accessible to the user's social circle for long periods of time. In our studies, we investigate how information aging impacts users' sharing preferences of information posted on Facebook, the largest online social networks. Our findings are based on two experiments: a within-subject user study (n=193) and a between-subject study (n=168) carried out through a custom application. Our results show that willingness to share drops significantly with the time passed since first publishing the post. The extent to which the post represents the user is correlated with a further decrease in the willingness to share. The occurrence of life changes, such as graduating from college or moving to a new town, is also a factor in the user's sharing preferences. We discuss our findings by relating information aging theories and privacy theories. Finally, we use our results to reflect on privacy mechanisms for long-term usage of online social networks, such as expiry date for content.
