Dr. Herman Haustein

Since the beginning of his academic career, Dr. Haustein has focused on understanding, rather than just accumulation of knowledge. He believes that when a new phenomenon is encountered, it must not only be investigated and characterized, but it should be closely analyzed so that the physical mechanisms behind it may be better understood. Thereby, the specific problem is viewed in a wider context and generalized, so that the methods applied to it and the understanding of it, become transferable to other physically-similar problems.

Dr. Haustein views the supervision and direction of graduate students as a central part of the research procedure. By providing tools and a supportive environment, they are able to discover and attempt new things, in order to attain their maximum potential
