The Wave and Towing Tank is an experimental facility operational for more than 25 years. Designed to be a versatile  apparatus to serve at a variety of scientific goals, the tank has been constantly modified through the years.

Many studies were conducted at the facility over the last two decades. The modular wave generation system was modified and upgraded lately, numerous types of water gages were designed and used, visualization measuring techniques were developed and implemented.

The tank serves as the main research facility for gravity waves/wave groups investigation and model studies using the towing carriage. Regular and random non-linear wave evolution including wave groups with narrow and wide spectra are studied. Investigation of the mechanisms that can possibly lead to the appearance of extremely steep (freak, or rogue) waves is carried out.

The tank dimensions are:

Length:..............18 m
Width:...............1.2 m
Depth:...............0.9 m
Water depth:.......0.6 m

At one end a flap type modular wave maker is mounted.

The wave maker is constructed from four independent modules in a row.

Each model can be driven independently using computerized close circuit control system.

At the opposite end the large beach is placed

The beach filling is made of porous plastic material significantly reducing the waves reflections.

The existing towing system is currently being replaced by a new one.
