Outlook Express

Start Outlook Express.

Select Tools.

Select Accounts.

Select the Mail Tab.

Select the account you wish to secure( Ayalon or Mail) and click Properties.

Select the Advanced Tab.

Check the boxes "Incoming mail" and "This server requires a secure connection (SSL) ". The number of port for IMAP will change from 110 to 993; for POP3 from 143 to 995.

Click OK and then CLOSE

אחרי פתיחת התוכנית פתח את התפריט Tools ושם בחר ב- Account

Outlook in Microsoft Office

Start Outlook.

Select Tools, Options, Mail Setup, E-Mail Accounts, View or change existing e-mail account, Next,

Select the account "mail.eng.tau.ac.il", Change, More Settings…,

Select the Advanced Tab.

Check the boxes "Incoming server (IMAP)" and "This server requires a secure connection (SSL) ".

Click OK and then Next, Finish, OK.

Eudora (not supported)

Start up Eudora.

Click on the Tools dropdown menu, then select Options.

Select Checking Mail and under 'Secure Sockets when Receiving' select 'Require, Alternate Port.

Select Sending Mail and under 'Secure Sockets when Sending' select 'If Available, STARTTLS' then click OK.

If you work with POP3,

Check for new mail and then you will receive the following message " Sorry, you don't have any new mail " OK.

Click on the Tools dropdown menu, then select Options, select Checking Mail and then click the "Last SSL Info" button.

The "Eudora SSL Connection Information Manager" dialog will appear.

Click on the "Certificate Information Manager" button.

When the "Certificate Information Manager" window dialog will appear , select the certificate under "Server Certificates" and open it with + sign.

Select the " IL, Tel Aviv University, ...", then click "Add to Trusted" button.

Click Done and then OK.

If you work with IMAP,

Change IMAP to POP3 and repeat actions formerly listed for POP3.

Goto Tools -> Options -> Checking Mail and under "Secure Sockets when Receiving" select "Never".

Select IMAP.

Eudora will be fetching all necessary structures from the server to your local host.

In Checking Mail under "Secure Sockets when Receiving" select "Require Alternate Port".

Click OK.

pop3 מול imap

קיימות שתי דרכים (protocols) נפוצות לקריאת דואר מרחוק, pop ו- imap.

ההבדל העיקרי בין שתי התוכנות הוא הגישה לקבצים. pop ניגש לתיבת דואר (folder)
אחת ויחידה ומתיחס רק אליה, ומאפשרת לטפל בדואר ולחלק אותו בתיבות מקומיות ב- PC עצמו. imap יכול לראות מדריך (directory) שלם של תיבות דואר או תיבות דואר נוספות שנמצאות במחשבים שונים, כך שניתן לגרור מכתב משרת דואר אחד לאחר.

הבדל נוסף נמצא בטעינת הדואר:

pop מביא את כל תיבת הדואר שבשרת אל תיבת הדואר-הנכנס שבמחשב המקומי. בסוף
העבודה, אם בקשת להשאיר את הדואר בשרת התיבה מועתקת בחזרה. היתרון בא לידי ביטוי
בעבודה מהבית – אחרי העתקת הדואר, pop מנתק את ההתחברות וחוסך פעימות מונה.
החיסרון בשיטה -- בגלל שהתיבה מועתקת כולה, pop נועל אותה בשרת עד לגמר העבודה.
בנוסף לכך, מכתבים שנמחקו, מוסתרים מהמשתמש אך אינם נמחקים באמת! הדבר יוצר
ניפוח של תיבות הדואר, עומס על השרת ושיבושים בנעילת התיבה לזמן ארוך.

imap משאירה את התיבה בשרת ורק מציגה את הפרטים כלומר, את הכותרות של המכתבים,
מכתב עצמו יוצג לפי בקשה. לפי שיטה זו תיבת הדואר לא צריכה להנעל בצורה גורפת ויש פחות
סיכוי להתנגשויות ושיבושים. במקרה של מחיקת מכתב - המחיקה מתבצעת באמת.
מה שנראה באינדקס זו התמונה האמיתית של תיבת הדואר. הפעלת disk quota במערכת ההפעלה מונע גידול תיבת הדואר הנכנס מעל גבול סביר.

בתוכנות הדואר המודרניות שתי האפשרויות יכולות להיראות דומות (מצד המשתמש),
לדוגמה, אפשר לעבוד ב- off-line עם imap או אפשר להורות ל- pop לבצע מחיקה
אמיתית (expunge, purge) של מכתבים.
