Composite materials are used extensively in many industries (for example: aerospace, automotive). Using the finite element method to analyze engineering composite structures requires knowledge of the constitutive response of the material. The method of cells (MOC) and its extension, the generalized method of cells (GMC), are micro-mechanical models capable to predict the overall response of a composite material given the knowledge of the properties of its individual phases. GMC was proven to be computationally efficient and accurate by many researches (for example check). The goal of this project is to develop a finite element, which uses the GMC model to predict the constitutive response of the composite material. This element could then be used to model composite structures.
Student(s) who choose this project will have to program the
developed element into a commercial finite element code and verify its use. A
graphic user interface also needs to be designed for definition of the
composite inner arrangement and material properties.
