Special Issue on Superhard Coatings
SURFACE AND COATINGS TECHNOLOGY
INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS

Papers presented at International Conference on Superhard Coatings will be considered for publication in a special issue of Surface and Coatings Technology.  The manuscript preparation, submission and reviewing procedure are according to general policy of the Journal (see the instructions to authors at: http://authors.elsevier.com/journal/surfcoat)

Submit your manuscript at the International Conference on Superhard Coatings to Guest Editors Dr. Vladimir Zhitomirsky and Dr. Avi Raveh on Sunday evening 26 February, or Monday 27 February.

FORMAT OF MANUSCRIPT

Submit one original and three photocopies of the manuscript, complete in all respects. Manuscripts should be typed double-spaced (NOT 1-1/2 spaced) on consecutively numbered pages of uniform size A4 (21´ 30 cm) or Letter (8.5´ 11”) with a 3.0 cm margin on the left and 2.0 cm margins on top, bottom and right. Use Arial or Times New Roman fonts. IUPAC-IUB nomenclature and SI units are required, (use nm instead of Angstroms, Pa instead of Torr or mbar). although common units may be placed in parentheses after the SI units.

In addition, the authors are requested to provide:

·                Electronic version of the complete manuscript (full text and figures) as Word or PDF file (3 copies), on CD-ROMs (preferred), or 3.5” floppy disks.

·                Author's Certification Form

ORGANIZATION OF MANUSCRIPT (Each item should begin on a new page)

1.       Manuscript Cover Page

2.       Title page containing the following, centered, starting at the top: title; names, affiliations and addresses of all authors. This is followed by the abstract, left-justified and double-spaced, which must include a concise statement of results and conclusions. (Note that abstract may extend onto a second page if necessary, but should be limited to 300 words)

3.       Text, double-spaced, which generally will consist of sections such as: Introduction, Experimental Apparatus and Procedure, Results, Discussion, Conclusions, Acknowledgments, etc.

4.       List of references (single-space within a reference, double-space between references)

5.       Tables, one per page (caption above each table)

6.       List of figure captions

7.       Figures (without captions; just put figure number at bottom)

MANUSCRIPT LENGTH

The authors are kindly asked to adhere to the manuscript length limitations. Invited papers are limited to 5000 words. Contributed papers are limited to 4000 words.

Estimation of length: One page of double-spaced text with above margins = 250 words. Each micrograph, photograph, graph, schematic, spectrum, etc., counts as 150 words. A full-page table counts as 300 words, half-page table as 150 words, etc. The list of references is included in the word count. The list of figure captions is not included in the word count.

LANGUAGE

All papers will be published in English. Authors in Japan : please note that information about how to have the English of your paper checked, corrected and improved (before submission) is available from:

REFERENCES

The References should be numbered consecutively throughout the text using square brackets and should be listed by number in a reference list at the end of the paper. Authors should ensure that every reference appearing in the text is in the list of references and vice versa. In the text, numerals for references are given in square brackets full-size, not as superscripts; numerals referring to equations are enclosed in parentheses.

The following are examples of how references should be listed for (1) a journal article, (2) a book, and (3) a multi-author book such as a conference proceedings:

When a conference proceedings paper has also been published in an archival journal, use the journal citation. For PhD theses, provide the title, name of university, and year. A "personal communication" should be referred to only when permission has been obtained from the person who made the personal communication and should include the affiliation of the individual.

A reference to "in the press" implies that the paper has been accepted for publication and must include the name or title of the publication. "Unpublished results" and oral presentations are not acceptable references.

TABLES

Each table, regardless of how short, should be placed on a separate sheet of paper. They are to be numbered with Roman numerals, and should have captions which make their general meaning understandable without reference to the text. The units in which results are expressed should be given at the top of each column and should not be repeated on each line of the table. It should be remembered that the length of a printed page is always greater than its width. Tables printed sideways (landscape) should only be used in extraordinary circumstances.

FIGURES

One complete set of original figures must be provided with the initial submission of the manuscript. Figures should be numbered with arabic numerals, with grouping of figures permitted and labeled with lower-case letters (e.g., figure 2a, 2b, etc.). Graphs, schematics, spectra, etc. should be submitted in the same size as originally drawn. The publisher will reduce the size for publication as appropriate. Because the publisher will reduce the size, all letters and numbers should be at least 3 mm in height. Line drawings in India ink on drawing paper or supplied as glossy black-and-white prints, or figures generated on a laser printer or high-resolution ink-jet printer on plain bond paper are acceptable. Figures generated on a dot-matrix printer or photocopies are not acceptable. Care should be taken in the use of computer-generated figures in that they often contain extraneous information or do not write exponents, subscripts, formulas, or symbols correctly (e.g., CR2O3 for chromium oxide on a figure is not acceptable). A scaled bar (sometimes called a micron marker) must be placed on all micrographs.

Each figure should be placed on a separate sheet of paper. The grouping of figures and labeled with lower-case letters (e.g., figure 2a, 2b, etc.), may be placed on the same sheet. Each original figure should bear the principal author's name and figure number on the bottom side of the sheet. Figure captions do not have to be placed on the figure; they should be provided on a separate sheet of paper.

Color plates. Figures may be published in color, if this is judged essential by the editor. There is an extra charge to the author for publication of color figures. Further information is available from the publisher. For color reproduction in print, you will receive information regarding the costs from Elsevier after receipt of your accepted article. For further information on the preparation of electronic artwork, please see http://www.elsevier.com/locate/authorartwork.

Please note: Because of technical complications which can arise by converting color figures to grey scale please submit in addition usable black and white prints corresponding to all the color illustrations.
