Abstract The large amounts of microwave power that have become available within the last few years have stimulated activity in finding new applications for microwaves. One of the possible general areas of application is wireless power transmission. Within this area, the microwave-powered helicopter is one of the specific applications which has received a significant amount of attention. This article reviews the present status of the microwave-powered helicopter and makes some projections of its future development. First, however, it may be of interest to review the historical background of the microwave-powered helicopter in order to understand why it has been selected from a number of potential applications of wireless power transmission for experimentation and development.
