Abstract

A general microwave heating system is analyzed to determine the factors affecting both initial and operating costs. It is found that the major cost determining factor is the efficiency of the r-f applicator. Relations between tube cost, life, efficiency and the cost of prime power are derived and a discussion of the relative economic merits of various tube types is presented. It is shown that the overall operating cost of a 27 mc r-f heating system is approximately one-half that of a microwave system. However, applicator deficiencies at the lower Frequencies could eliminate this cost advantage.
