Abstract Certain integer and
non-integer relations are shown to determine the maximum degeneracy (optimum
coupling) conditions in large, unloaded multimode cavities of the type used
in microwave power processing. Mathematically, the conditions are analogous
to problems that have been studied in acoustics. The continuous frequency
modulation of a typical two kilowatt magnetron by a full wave, unfiltered
power supply has been measured. This figure is taken as a typical source
bandwidth (0.6% at 2.45 GHz) for the energy supplied to a cavity.
