Abstract

To compare the relative merits of microwave drying of granular solids with conventional methods of drying, a good deal of work on a pilot scale microwave drier would at present be necessary. Methods are therefore required for determining, with the very limited data available, whether extensive pilot plant investigations are at all economically justified.  An attempt is made to provide a method for preparation of such preliminary feasibility estimates for a moving-bed drier. Applicator and frequency selections, dielectric constant estimating, and quantitative microwave effects on drying materials are discussed with reference to several specific drying mechanisms. Microwave fluidized-bed drying is examined brief1y for illustration.
