Abstract

A microwave applicator is proposed for both batch and continuous flow insitu oxidation of elemental sulphur to sulphuric acid in the aqueous phase. Both double-slot magnetic field coupling and electric field coupling is used to excite the , mode in the cylindrical applicator while the dominant TE mode is suppressed. A dual feed excitation system which utilises a short-slot top-wall coupler provides uniform heating and continuous source protection. Experimental results made on an X-band model are described.
