Abstract A warning label is now required
on all microwave ovens to alert the owner of the possibility of exposure to excessive
microwave energy leakage. An exemption may be granted upon the determination
that the oven will continue to comply with the leakage requirements under the
adverse conditions called out in the label. These conditions relate to
operating the oven with an object caught in the door or a damaged door. Amana
Refrigeration, Inc., has obtained an exemption for
Models RR-7 and RR-9 Microwave Ovens. The design features of the Amana door
and the extensive testing program to establish that the warning label is
unnecessary are presented in detail. The door contains a quarter wavelength
slotted choke filled with a dielectric. It is tuned to 2450 MHz. The ovens
were tested to establish that use or abuse of the door seal according to the
three parts of the warning label, does not increase
the leakage above 5m W/cm². |
