Abstract

A Toshiba model EBT-600 microwave oven is modified so as to continuously monitor the effective dielectric temperature (EDT) of the work load by non contact sensing means. The proposed method of measurement can be used to automatically adjust the rate of temperature rise by controlling the microwave power level, the duty cycle and heating time. Such an automatic control can be useful to improve the uniformity of cooking from sample to sample, and also to prevent the formation of "hot spots" in materials for which the dielectric loss factor increases rapidly with temperature. The method and equipment used are described, and measurements on a variety of products are presented (food, textiles, rubber, ores, etc.). This new method of measurements can be used with any multi-mode microwave oven. In addition the method of measurement can also be used to measure the complex dielectric constant of materials in the presence of microwave power radiation.
