Abstract Ward discusses a number of measurements of ionization density in flames and in an IC engine. Langmuir probes were used in such measurements and because of both experimental effects and the theoretical description of these probes has improved greatly in the last few years the magnitude of the ionization density which these papers report may well be too high.
