Abstract A closed-groove guide type cavity is described. Its resonance mode is a quasi-unique mode. A large diameter cylindrical dielectric sample may be introduced into the cavity still conserving a high quality factor which is a necessary condition in order to obtain a large field amplification factor. The field profile along the sample axis is adjustable and may be asymmetric. Coupling devices are discussed and experimental details are given.
