Abstract

Experiments were recently carried out with a 75-mm (3”) diameter cylindrical combustion bomb in order to study the interaction of microwaves with hydrocarbon (HC)-air flame plasmas, The combustion bomb was excited in the  microwave mode and the interaction between the microwave electric field and the initially hemispherically propagating flame front plasma resulting from a centrally located igniting spark was determined. Both the theoretical evaluation and experimental determination of the cavity Q electrically loaded with the flame plasma are presented and exhibit remarkably good agreement for the generally accepted values of HC-air flame front plasma parameters.
