Abstract A new microwave end seal
for use in microwave conveyor systems is described. This seal employs the
well known cutoff-tube principle. Multiple tube seals were constructed and
tested in a continuous-feed pilot-plant microwave applicator at both 2.45 GHz and 0.915 GHz.
Tests were also conducted in a conventional water-cooled end-trap applicator
to determine the amount of energy lost in the form of heat to the water
traps. It was shown that using tobacco as the load a minimum of ~ 20% of the
energy is lost in the end traps. Since the cutoff-tube
seal avoids this loss, a savings in both capital and operating costs can be
realized. |
