Abstract

Microwave energy was coupled to a 9.5 cm (3.75 ") diameter cylindrical combustion bomb of height 1.5 cm containing propane-air mixtures at 101 kpa (1atm). The mixtures were ignited by both conventional spark ignition and plasma jet ignition. The bomb was excited in the  mode at power levels of the order of 100 W by means of a magnetron operating at 2.45 GHz. The application of microwave energy was seen to considerably :extend the lean limit and to double the flame speed near the lean limit of the plasma-jet-ignited mixture.
