Abstract

The analysis of a specimen geometry from the point of view of the accuracy of microwave measurements of the moisture content is presented. Relations for the calculation of the length and width of the sample are given and optimum dimensions of the antenna aperture are specified in terms of the dielectric properties of the test materials. Effects of the temperature and material density of samples are discussed, including their compensation. Examples of calculations and some experimental data for the moisture measurement of selected foodstuffs and agricultural products (wheat, flour, starch, egg powder, etc.) performed in the X-band are also presented. Selection of optimum conditions for measuring moisture content on the basis of microwave attenuation of the test material is possible.
