Abstract Automated frequency- and
time-domain techniques for measuring the dielectric properties of rocks are
discussed. Although emphasis is placed on those methods used in our
laboratories, discussion of other work available in the literature is also
included. The relative merits and limitations of the frequency- and
time-domain techniques are evaluated. Some representative results
illustrating the variation of the complex permittivity of oil shale as a
function of frequency, temperature, and grade are given. The paper is
concluded with the description of an in-situ dielectric probe which utilizes
an open-ended section of transmission line as a sample holder. Experimental
results illustrating the accuracy of the on-line measurements are presented
and suggestions for the future development of the in-situ probe are
discussed. |
