Abstract

The general physics of plasma wave heating of magnetically confined plasma will be discussed. A presentation of the basic physical mechanism, theoretical models, and experimental results will be given. Emphasis will be placed on heating in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies, the use of lower-hybrid waves to generate current, and the use of electro-cyclotron heating in tandem mirrors. Additional applications will also be given.
