Abstract

Several methods for the disposal of radioactive and industrial waste have been proposed and are in practical use. Among them it is known that the method by fusing and solidifying is very effective. At present the application of microwave heating is under development as a means of fusing. For design of this heating system and the determination of operating conditions, it is indispensable to know the exact characteristics of the electromagnetic field distribution. However, the electromagnetic fields inside such a system are very complicated because of its three-dimensional nature, with various changing medium conditions. For analysis of complicated fields, numerical methods are generally accepted: the analysis by Bergeron's method has been shown to be effective for such problems involving complex boundary and medium conditions in three-dimensional space. In this paper we apply Bergeron's formulation to the microwave heating furnace.
