Abstract

A simple instrument is described which records the power absorbed in a water load placed in a microwave oven. It consists of a calibrated sliding scale over the face of an alcohol thermometer housed in a low-loss plastic spoon. Values recorded are typically 10% less than the IEC-Standard value; when compared with precision measurements using insulated containers, readings to ± 5% can be obtained. The instrument can be used with different loads to determine the effective microwave watts delivered and to monitor oven power variables associated with line voltage changes and magnetron temperature. This is a brief communication.
