Abstract

A high-intensity, microwave-powered arc lamp for spectroscopic applications is described. The lamp produces a stable, contaminant free hot plasma  containing refractory oxides which are formed in situ from more volatile precursors. Spectra obtained from a representative lamp containing niobium oxide (NbO) are discussed. An applicator for energizing the lamp with microwave power is described.
