Abstract This paper gives a brief introduction to infrared technology, with particular reference to its areas of application and the selection of emitter types. It also discusses the principles of systems design and stresses the importance of pilot testing to ensure successful installation. Finally, the paper concludes with an example of infrared in action and demonstrates the way in which one manufacturer is adapting its expertise to suit today’s technology.
