Abstract Shielded-open-coaxial-line and short-monopole techniques, based on reflection coefficient measurement, for determining moisture content of granular agricultural materials are described. Theoretical investigations were conducted using published data of soil permittivity to determine approximately the suitable dimensions and operating frequencies of the coaxial line and monopole. Both structures were then constructed and subsequently tested with unhusked rice and unshelled peanuts. The moisture content of each test material was reduced step by step by exposing it to the sun for a short period of time and was determined conventionally after each test. Experimental results have shown that the reflection for coefficient obtained from both methods is linearly proportional to the moisture content. Key
