Abstract

A simple mathematical analysis of freeze-drying by microwaves of materials in a form of thin plates is presented.  The energy and mass transfer equations are solved analytically.  Evaluation of the upper bound of the partial water vapour pressure and temperature in the dry region of the temperature in the frozen region are given explicitly and in a graphical form suitable for application to different materials and physical conditions,.  Under certain conditions both the pressure and the temperature variations across the plate are negligibly small, which may simplify mathematical modelling of freeze-drying of foamed liquids.
