Abstract

A 500 W 2.45 GHz fundamental mode microwave waveguide cavity is used as an applicator for rapid heating of liquids and solids, for sample dissolution both at atmospheric pressure and in closed vessels.   A personal computer is used to accurately control time and power and to continuously monitor temperature of a sample using standard thermocouples.  Pressure measurement inside closed vessels using a pressure transducer is also performed.  Feedback control allows constant temperature and pressure to be maintained at predetermined levels.  The waveguide is shown to heat samples very reproducibly.  Its usefulness and versatility is illustrated.
