Abstract

Transient and spatial temperature profiles of liquids (water and corn oil) inside a cylindrical container during batch microwave heating at 2450 MHz were measured.  Radial temperature profiles showed increasing temperature towards the center in 11 cm diameter container but not in a 17 cm diameter container.  This was attributed to focussing of microwaves in the smaller diameter container.  Axial temperature profiles showed temperatures increasing toward the top.  Transient temperature rise at a given location was almost linear.  The slowest heating region was at the container bottom due to small energy penetration through the bottom.  The higher rate of heating for oil was explained using the difference in dielectric and thermal properties.
