Abstract A numerical model, MEGAERA 4.0, which simulates electromagnetic heating in a lossy earth-type medium and includes heat transfer by conduction and convection, has been developed. Convective heat transfer is accounted for by using concepts from the theory of incompressible single-phase fluid flow through a porous medium. The numerical model is two-dimensional in cartesian or axi-symmetric cylindrical coordinates and serves to evaluate schemes for electrically heating oil reservoirs in an attempt to enhance production. The salient features of MEGAERA 4.0 and a validation test are described and the numerical results for the electromagnetic simulation of a single well heavy oil installation are given and compared to actual results obtained in the field Key
