Abstract

The purpose of this work is the comparison between hydrodynamic behaviour s observed during water and ethanol evaporation induced by microwave heating and simultaneously under reduced pressure, in order to generalize the specificity of microwave heating in relation to the thermal dependency of dielectric loss.  In this Part I a brief overview concerning hydrodynamic instabilities is given (convective patterns for Rayleigh-Bérnard, Marangoni, and Hickman instability) in order to provide a reference frame for understanding the significance of the results we will present in other papers.  The experiment device specially designed for the study of very polar liquids as water is described.
