Abstract A method for measuring properties of granular materials based on a microwave cross-polarized backscattering measurement is discussed. The theoretical background of the method is presented. The suitability of the method, for characterizing inclusions of materials having indefinite shape as spheroids having a certain eccentricity is discussed. Data of the measurement of the backscattering cross-section of white rice, seeds of alfalfa and green lentils are presented. Key Words: Microwave sensor, Material measurement, Microwave scattering.
