Abstract

Granular activated carbon was regenerated at 650, 700 and 750°C in a multimode cavity at 2450 MHz. Acceptable carbon performance was obtained by regeneration at 650°C for zero minutes. Microwave  regenerated material out-performed conventionally regenerated carbon. The preliminary capital cost estimate for a 120 kW microwave unit to process 120 kg/h was $ 150000 and the operating cost $ 70/t carbon. Comparison with competing technologies shows that there is merit in further investigation.
