Abstract This paper concerns the design and application of a cylindrical TM020
mode applicator for in-line microwave preheating of precatalysed
thermosetting resin during resin transfer moulding (RTM). A 35% reduction in
cycle time was achieved using such an applicator through the elimination of
mould quench as cool resin was injected into a heated mould. Although this
paper focuses on heating precatalysed polyester
resin, the results are applicable to the in-line heating of any viscous,
temperature sensitive fluid where excessive heating of the laminar boundary
layers is undesirable. Key Words: Microwave preheating, Thermosetting resin, Cylindrical TM020
