Abstract

Microwave energy has been used to both heat and to sense the properties of continuous filamentary materials. This paper describes a simple microwave applicator suitable for some applications of this nature.  The filament travels parallel to the direction of energy propagation in a rectangular waveguide partially filled with a low loss dielectric material.  Energy is coupled to the filament through a longitudinal component of electric field generated at the air-dielectric interface.
