Abstract

S band measurements were conducted using a network analyzer to obtain the dielectric properties of leather as a function of moisture content at 21ºC. The results were interpreted using Wiener's theory for dielectric mixtures to evaluate the degree of binding of water in leather. It is shown that up to a volumetric moisture content of approximately 20%, the degree of binding increases rapidly and levels off thereafter. These results are supported by data on the evaporation rate of absorbed water in leather.
