Abstract This paper discusses the current responsibilities and activities of the Bureau of Radiological Health in carrying out the requirements of the Radiation Control for Health and Safety Act of 1968, especially in relation to industrial uses of microwave power. It assesses the public health significance of industrial versus other types of applications and describes past, current, and anticipated investigations which are believed to be necessary to properly evaluate potential hazards and develop Federal standards. The responsibilities of the manufacturer, user, and regulatory agencies in cooperatively safeguarding the public health and safety are delineated.
