Light propagation, polarization and rigorous diffraction theory

Design of diffractive optical elements (DOEs) usually exploits scalar diffraction Fourier methods and scalar ray tracing that have advanced to the level of either analytical equations or well established iterative algorithms. Scalar diffraction DOE design is substantially based on existence of saw-tooth local scalar diffraction grating with nearly 100% diffraction efficiency. It is remarkable that highly efficient surface relief diffraction gratings are also readily available in the resonance domain, where the DOE grating periods are comparable to the illumination wavelength
