----------------------------------------------- Unofficial firmware upgrade v1.4.9 for Linksys WMP11 Wireless PCI Card ----------------------------------------------- Patched and packaged by Avishai Wool , Aug 2002. Based on the Linksys firmware v1.4.2 upgrade utility, using the Intersil Prism HEX files posted to the HostAP mailing list. ******************************* *** WARNING WARNING *** ******************************* This is NOT an official Linksys firmware upgrade utility. This is a _patched_ utility that I used for my research, and it worked for me. I'm giving you this, FOR FREE, with absolutely NO WARRANTY: * Using it WILL probably VOID the warranty on your Linksys Wireless card. * Using it may DAMAGE your Linksys Wireless card, maybe beyond repair. * Using it may even DAMAGE your PC. You are totally on your own here. Don't come crying to me if this utility trashes your disk or burns your wireless card. I strongly recommend that you do NOT use this utility on any equipment that you really care about, like your employer's PCs or wireless cards. ******************************** YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! ******************************** If you are brave enough to try it, here is what worked for me. Hardware/Software I used: ------------------------- Desktop PC (Pentium 4) running Windows 2000 Professional Linksys WMP11 Instant Wireless PCI Card. Out of the box it had: primary firmware 1.0.5 secondary firmware 1.3.1 I can't tell if the upgrade will work on other systems. Experiment at your own risk! Procedure --------- 1. Follow the Linksys instructions for installation using the provided CD (first install the drivers, then power down and install the PCI card, power up, and complete software install). Make sure the card is recognized by the linksys configuration utility. Look in the 'About' tab, it shows you your secondary firmware version. 2. Unzip the archive WMP11-1.4.9-patched.zip 3. Run wmp11-1.4.9-patched.exe. A window should show you your progress. If all goes well, it will upgrade your WMP11 to primary firmware v1.1.0 secondary firmware v1.4.9 4. If your PC still works and the WMP11 card is still recognized by the linksys configuration utility, the 'About' tab should show you 'Firmware versions: 1.04.09.00'. Success! If you are using HostAP on a linux box -------------------------------------- 1. Install the upgraded PCI card in your linux box 2. start HostAP 3. A good output from 'dmesg' is: hostap_crypt: registered algorithm 'NULL' hostap_pci: hostap_pci.c 0.0.0 CVS (SSH Communications Security Corp, Jouni Malinen) hostap_pci: (c) SSH Communications Security Corp PCI: Found IRQ 11 for device 00:0f.0 hostap_pci: Registered netdevice wlan0 prism2_hw_init() prism2_hw_config: initialized in 18222 iterations wlan0: NIC: id=0x8013 v1.0.0 wlan0: PRI: id=0x15 v1.1.0 wlan0: STA: id=0x1f v1.4.9 wlan0: LinkStatus=2 (Disconnected) wlan0: Intersil Prism2.5 PCI: mem=0x42000000, irq=11 The 'STA: id=0x1f v1.4.9' message is what you want to see.
