INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
on
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY in CIVIL and STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING DESIGN -
TAKING STOCK and FUTURE DIRECTIONS
14th-16th August 1996
GLASGOW
SCOTLAND
BACKGROUND
This conference will review all aspects of Information Technology in
Civil and Structural Engineering Design. Papers presented may
discuss research in progress but papers concerned with the following
are particularly relevant to the conference.
* analysis of penetration of the use of Information Technology in Design;
* present trends in the use of Information Technology in
design Practice;
* future developments in the use of Information Technology in
Design.
The following are the main themes of the Conference :
Information Access Systems;
AI-based Systems including :
Expert Systems and Case-based Systems;
Database Systems;
Integrated Design Systems;
Concurrent Engineering Applications; Construction as a
Manufacturing process; Hypertext-based Systems.
Multimedia and VR applications.
Papers from any sub-discipline of Civil and Structural Engineering
will be welcomed. The conference will take a broad view of
design as encompassing all activities concerned with planning and
synthesis of all constructed facilities, i.e. buildings, bridges,
dams, harbours, etc.
KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
Prof. DONALD E. GRIERSON, University of Waterloo, Canada -
will address the Taking Stock theme.
Prof. JOHN S. GERO, Key Centre for Design Computing, Sydney,
Australia - will address the Future Directions theme.

centenary in 1996. The University has been at the forefront of
teaching and research in Applied Science and has become a centre of
excellence in the field of Computer-Aided Design.
Glasgow and the surrounding area offer a host of things for
visitors to see and do. The City is an ideal base for exploring
the rest of Scotland with easy access to some of Scotland's most
beautiful and dramatic scenery - the West Coast and the Highlands
and Islands.
