A third of Fortune 500 Companies will not survive the next 5 years, if
history is an indication of the future. In contrast, there are quite a
few large companies who have survived as leaders for over 75
years. Why?
The reason lies in the communication and information management
practices of these organizations.
The technological world is undergoing quick changes causing
organizations to restructure their modes of operation. Agile design
and manufacturing and leaning towards knowledge-intensive, rather then
labor-intensive, businesses are two important trends. In order to
address these forces, R&D organizations look for new methods,
techniques and tools.
The operation of contemporary R&D organizations is characterized by
distribution of resources, maintenance of core specialized knowledge,
and displacing business activities where the organization does not
have a leading-edge over competitors. This strategy requires business
and engineering cooperation between companies on a particular project
that otherwise could compete.
In order to succeed in future markets, organizations develop
international R&D activities, fast information communication links
between organization members, and maintenance and organization of
information for future reuse. Search, organization, visualization, anc
communication facilities become the most important means of carrying
international R&D.
Some organizations believe that if they "acquire" these technologies,
they will become competitive,
- To learn about advanced information communication and management
technologies for supporting the work of knowledge-intensive
organizations (Intranet, Videoconferencing, Hypermedia, PDM,
Groupware, CSCW, etc.)
- To understand the implications involved in implementing these
technologies in organizations.
- To understand the parameters determining the success or failure of
implementation projects.
- To learn about future trends of these technologies.

Several other companies dealing with communication and information
management have already expressed an interest to exhibit their
products and/or services.
Others will be contacted.
In addition to the workshop itself we intend to develop this site to a
live resource on the subject. We will create links from this site to
the exhibitors' sites (as above) and maintain them in the future. In addition, we
will maintain a page about the exhibitors with short descriptions of
their activities and products as supplied by the companies.
If you have something to offer and would like to exhibit, contact the
workshop organizer. Note: the exhibition
involves a small fee.

We intend to continue with a series of events on Communication
and Information Management (CIM) for Distributed R&D Organizations.
- The next event to take place around March. It will deal with PDM
(product data management) technbologies, methods of implementation,
and success or failure stories.
- the experience of large companies in developing and
using CIM technology. There are several such companies (e.g.,
SGI, Price Waterhouse, Ernst & Young) who have representatives or
subsidiaries in Israel.
The attraction in these examples comes from the use that these
companies make with their own tools, leading to faster product
development based on quick internal feedback. Such use presents strong
commitment and belief in the tools these companies develop.
- Complete CAD solutions: From conceptual to detailed design, and to
manufacturing. (concurrent engineering; design for manufacturing,
assembly, cost, etc.; life-cycle constraint management)
- Integration of PDM/ERP within and accross organization.
- Information management, organization, search, and use.
- Videoconferencing and shared spaces (i.e., same-time communication).
- Impact of CIM on organizations.
- Virtual reality/virtual worlds.
- Rapid prototyping in various industries (e.g., manufacturing,
software).
In the future, we will develop additional workshops.
The order of these workshops will be influenced by attendants'
feedback.
In time, we will also devlop on-line dicsussion groups on the subjects of the
workshops.
