History & Purpose of SME:
The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) is a professional society dedicated to the advancement of scientific knowledge in the field of manufacturing engineering. Since its founding in 1932, SME has provided direction for the evolution of manufacturing, and has gained an international reputation for manufacturing technology leadership. SME has over 75,000 members in 70 countries and sponsors over 300 senior chapters and 200 student chapters worldwide.

In today's complex manufacturing environment, practitioners often need in-depth and current information on a variety of specific technologies. SME addresses this need through its associations--subgroups of SME membership, providing user and applications-oriented information to members targeted toward 11 manufacturing-related areas including: Members of the SME have the option of joining one or more of the Technical Associations. These associations provide members with special resources to help them keep abreast of develpments in their specialty areas.

• Association for Electronics Manufacturing of SME (EM/SME)
• Association for Finishing Processes of SME (AFP/SME)
• Machine Vision Association of SME (MVA/SME)
• Machining Technology Association of SME (MTA/SME)
• North American Manufacturing Research Institution of SME (NAMRI/SME)
• Forming Technologies Association of SME (FTA/SME)
• Plastics Molders and Manufacturers Association of SME (PMMA/SME)
• Rapid Prototyping Association of SME (RPA/SME)
• Robotics International of SME (RI/SME)

Manufacturing demands excellence from its practitioners. As technologies advance, those who have mastered the challenges--and have the initiative to learn new skills--will become increasingly important elements in their companies' success. Professional certification though SME helps you gain recognition as one who has mastered the skills--and has the drive to learn new ones.
SME offers three categories of certification:

• Certified Manufacturing Technologist (CMfgT)
• Certified Manufacturing Engineer (CMfgE)
• Certified Enterprise Integrator (CEI)

Members' Benefits (general):

• Find solutions to technology-specific problems through the SME Technical Referral Database;

Members' Benefits (Israel):

• For many years, SME has been donating books to Tel Aviv University. We maintain this tradition. Consequently, a member of SME has free access to the Engineering and Science Library at Tel Aviv University (check openning hours here).
