History & Purpose of SME:
The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) is a professional society dedicated to the advancement of scientific knowledge in the field of manufacturing engineering. Since its founding in 1932, SME has provided direction for the evolution of manufacturing, and has gained an international reputation for manufacturing technology leadership. SME has over 75,000 members in 70 countries and sponsors over 300 senior chapters and 200 student chapters worldwide.

In today's complex manufacturing environment, practitioners often need in-depth and current information on a variety of specific technologies. SME addresses this need through its associations--subgroups of SME membership, providing user and applications-oriented information to members targeted toward 11 manufacturing-related areas including: Members of the SME have the option of joining one or more of the Technical Associations. These associations provide members with special resources to help them keep abreast of develpments in their specialty areas.

Manufacturing demands excellence from its practitioners.
