Abstract. Participation in design is an old concept, nevertheless, it is hardly used in practice. There are many issues that imped extending the practice of participation.

Improving the effectiveness of participation may benefit from the development of support tools. Some implications of participation to computer tool design are discussed and a prototype computer tool called n-dim that addresses these implications is described with a brief example of its use in a hypothetical participation project.

Keywords: participatory design, design support system, modeling, integrated design system, computer supported collaborative design.
